Canada is going cordless

A new government directive has been issued in an effort to increase child-safety in regards to window treatments. Effective May 1, 2022, no window coverings sold in Canada will have lift cords, while inner and back cords (or any other reachable cords) will be subject to heighten restrictions. Please note that such Regulations apply to window coverings that are purchased for non-commercial purposes, including for domestic, recreational and sports purposes. For more information please refer to Corded Window Covering Regulations (justice.gc.ca).

What do these new regulations cover?

These new regulations apply to all window coverings for consumer use in Canada from all manufacturers and retailers, regardless of whether the window coverings are manufactured in Canada or imported into Canada from any other country.

I purchased new corded blinds for multiple windows in one room last year. Will I be able to buy one more of the same blind so that they all match after the new regulations take effect?

If the product is corded you will not be able to purchase the exact same window treatment after the new regulations take effect. However, depending on the product a visually identical window treatment may be available in a cordless mechanism, as many of our products were previously available in corded or cordless options and the cordless options will still be available.

Will all the same products be available as before when the new regulation goes into effect?

Unfortunately certain products are not currently offered in a cordless version and so those products will be temporarily discontinued until we develop a cordless version. Our engineers and product development teams are hard at work coming up with innovative solutions to replace blinds and shades that were previously only available in a corded style.

Which products will be temporarily discontinued after the new regulations go into effect?

  • Top-down Bottom-up Shades
  • Pleated Shades

Aluminum/Mini Blinds will be available but temporarily only in a static height that can not be raised and lowered. They will feature a tilt rod that will allow you to tilt the slats open and closed for adjustments to your view and privacy.

What if my windows are too high to raise and lower fully with a cordless mechanism?

At Blinds To Go we offer a variety of motorized and automated options that range in functionality and price. Choose to motorized a single hard-to-reach window that can be controlled by remote or smartphone app or equip your entire home with voice controlled smart window treatments and any combination therein.

How does this new regulation effect the window treatments that I already have in my home?

The new recommendations only apply to newly purchased window coverings. However these new regulations are being put into place to save lives, specifically those of children and pets. If you have pets or children, or if you have family members that will visit with little ones, you may want to conduct your own window safety audit. Reveiw all of your windows and look for reachable, dangling cords or loops in bedrooms and common areas alike. If any cords are reachable that is a red flag for safety. To make existing window treatments as safe as possible consider the following:

  • Install only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords in homes with young children. Replace window blinds and corded shades with products that are cordless or have inaccessible cords.
  • Move all cribs, beds, furniture, and toys away from windows and window covering cords.
  • When window covering cords are present, ensure that all window covering cords are out of sight and reach, by shortening or moving them up and away, so that they are inaccessible to young children.
