Different Types of Window Blinds

Learn about the different types of window blinds to find what will work best in your space.

Every home–and really every room–has different window treatment needs. For example, window shades can offer blackout solutions, which are perfect for bedrooms, bathrooms, or areas you may want more privacy. They also suit simple, modern styles.

On the other hand, window blinds offer a different set of benefits and aesthetics. While they don’t provide total blackout like a shade, window blinds give you more precise control over how much light is let into your space (and subsequently how much visibility you have). And if you’re looking to add visual interest to your window fixtures, blinds are a perfect option.

In this blog, we’ll be covering our guide to the different types of window blinds we offer, how they work, and the best way to measure, install, and fix your window blinds. Most importantly, we’ll discuss which blinds will work best for you (and your space!).

How Do Blinds Work?

When people think about window treatments, typically what they visualize are traditional horizontal blinds. And while these types of blinds are a staple, different styles of window blinds will operate in different ways. Like shades, blinds are capable of opening and closing, adjusting the amount of light in your space quickly. But unlike shades, which are made of a single piece of material, most blinds are also able to tilt. This hgives you fine-tuned control over how much light and privacy you get.

Depending on the blinds you get, the way that they function may differ. For example, horizontal blinds can be mounted either inside or outside your window frame. They are made up of horizontal slats that open and tilt vertically, with a cordless mechanism and wand, respectively.

Vertical blinds are typically mounted on the outside of windows or doors, and work in an opposite way to horizontal blinds. Like horizontal blinds, they are also made up of individual slats, but open and tilt horizontally, which is why these are typically used for doors.

Shutters, while technically considered blinds, operate a little bit differently since they're mounted on a hinge.

How To Install Window Blinds

We try to make the process of purchasing your window treatments as easy as possible—and that includes installing your window blinds. We offer professional measurement and installation services, which means you never have to worry about how to install window blinds.

That being said, if you're not interested in using our installation team, you can choose to install most of our window blinds yourself. There are exceptions depending on your product, but for the most part our blinds are easy to install. When you receive your order, each blind will include installation instructions that clearly walk you through the steps. If you have any questions, you can always call your showroom, or chat with our help team.

How To Fix Window Blinds

We understand that sometimes life happens, which is why all the moving parts of your blinds are covered under a lifetime warranty. The warranty covers the mechanism of the blind (any parts that make it go up and down, or tilt) and components related to those mechanisms (like the wand). The only products that have a different warranty are motorized blinds, shades, and drapes. Your local showroom will be able to let you know the details about what exactly your warranty covers.

So don't worry about figuring out how to fix your broken window blinds. If you're able to, pop the broken window blinds off the brackets that attach them to the wall, and bring them to your local Blinds To Go showroom. If for whatever reason you're not able to take them down yourself, you can schedule a service call and a technician will come to your home to take the broken window blinds off the window and reinstall them once they're fixed.

How To Remove Window Blinds

If you decide to remove the window blinds yourself, the process is even easier than installing them. Simply unclip the top of the blind from the brackets holding them to the wall. There will be a bracket on each side of the window treatment. Depending on the blinds you purchased, the bracket mechanism will be slightly different. To learn how to remove window blinds with your particular brackets, contact your local showroom, who will be able to explain the process to you.

Choosing the right window blinds for your space takes multiple factors into account. From knowing your needs to getting an idea of budget and thinking about installation, there is a lot that goes into it. And while this blog is a great starting point, having someone go through the process with you makes it that much easier. That’s why our design consultants are available to tell you everything you need to know about purchasing window blinds that will be perfect for you. Remember that you can visit a showroom (find your local one here) or schedule an appointment for a designer to come to your home below!
